BEYONCE 4: ARTWORK &  THE STORY BEHIND EACH SONG

1+1

’4′ is a twelve-song collection born of the diverse sounds and sights Beyoncé experienced during her year-long time away from the spotlight. It is her self-described musical gumbo. Much like the dish, the album serves as melting pot of musical styles punctuated by her undeniable vocal abilities

I CARE

‎'4' takes on matters of the heart with a mixture of ballads, mid- and up-tempos, all built around classic songwriting

I MISS YOU

‎"The album is definitely an evolution. It's bolder than the music on my previous albums because I'm bolder. The more mature I become and the more life experiences I have, the more I have to talk about. I really focused on songs being classics, songs that would last, songs that I could sing when I'm 40 and when I'm 60."

BEST THING I NEVER HAD

What is the definition of perfection…or the closest thing to it? Beyoncé. Icons are made. Stars are born. From the moment Beyoncé took her first breath, her star was shining. What an honor it is for me to say that I danced with a true star. Or wrote. Same thing. :)”
-Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds

PARTY (FT ANDRE' 3000)

"I've always felt Beyoncé was one the best performers of our time so to collaborate with her was an honor and a pleasure."
- André 3000

“4 showcases Beyonce's voice as a formidable

instrument throughout. She effortlessly goes from a

smoky alto to a sexy powerful soprano that is

equally at home on ballads as it is on head-bopping

jams.”

RATHER DIE YOUNG

I really want people to think when they listen to my music. I want it to help them through their painful memories, their painful moments, and their most happy moments. I want it to be a conversation.”

START OVER

For the first time in my life I was able to travel the world, hear different influences, see different types of dance and choreography and taste different types of food. It was important that I was able to digest everything. It inspired purity, more heart and more love.”

LOVE ON TOP

“When I played Etta James it was the most I’d learned about myself until the recording of this album. When I went into the studio I used the same passion, honesty, and approach with my vocals I channeled as Etta James. It does not sound like the vocals on my past albums. It’s a lot rawer. It comes from a deep place.”

COUNTDOWN

“I really liked mixing the 90s with the 70s. I put those two together and it was so much fun putting bridges back into songs, all the things in music that I love that I feel I just want to hear again.”

END OF TIME

“I listened closely to a lot of the rock musicians I saw at music festivals around the world, paying attention to their lyrics, melodies, and the mixture of their different instruments. The instrumentation was just so beautiful. I felt I needed some classic like that.”

I Was Here

“I have always wanted to work with Beyoncé. I wrote one of my best songs, ‘I Was Here,’ and I thought that the one artist who would be my dream to sing this would be Beyoncé. This is one of those magical stories where what is meant to be actually happens. I played it for her and she loved it and said she was going to record it immediately. This kind of thing never happens! Without even hearing a second time, two days later she was recording it!!! I’ve never had chills through my entire body like I had when I heard Beyonce singing this song. ‘I Was Here’ came from my soul and became the song that was coming from hers. In all my life, I have never heard anything as this. Hearing her sing ‘I Was Here’ will forever be the one of the best moments of my life, and I know this song will touch any other lives as well.” -Diane Warren

RUN THE WORLD (GIRLS)

“I try to write songs that will bring out the best in all of us and keep us close together. I think about saying the things that women want to say but sometimes are not confident enough to say. I’m going to continue to write those songs that give women strength.”

Beyonce:4 Art Work..AMAZING

A Special Beyonce Hour This Week End

This Thursday, June 30th at 7PM ET/PT, MTV and BET will jointly premiere Beyoncé: Year of 4, a half-hour TV special documenting the year-long personal and artistic journey Beyoncé embarked upon on the road to 4.

Beyoncé: Year of 4 begins at the conclusion of Beyoncé's much anticipated I AM... tour, and the superstar's realization that she's in need of a break. Heeding the advice of her mother, the life-long workaholic retreats from the public eye to spend a year traveling the world and spending time with her family and husband, Jay-Z, all of which she documents with her own camera. Reflecting on all she's accomplished during her time away, Beyoncé decides to mark her return by taking control of her business and making an album both heartfelt and personal.

Beyoncé's return to the spotlight as an independent woman sees her navigating her new company through the rough waters of the music industry while working to deliver an album both honest and completely different from anything she's ever done - and everything the mainstream expects of her. Beyoncé: Year of 4 tracks that journey, and the personal and artistic success it brings Beyoncé, culminating in the release of her fourth solo album, 4.

4 is NOW AVAILABLE ACROSS NORTH AMERICA

The wait is over: 4 is now available online and in stores across North America ( Standard | Deluxe ) and much of the world!

there are few reviews of 4 that were published in the UK, where the album was released yesterday and shot to #1 on the iTunes charts. Today, with the album out in the US, we've got 4 more reviews of 4 to share with you, this time from the other side of the pond:

*the New York Times review of 4

"Most of '4,' though, no one else could get away with, or would even want to try. Beyoncé will turn 30 in September, and judging by the mood of this album, it couldn’t come any more quickly," Jon Caramanica of the New York Times writes. "For Beyoncé, content always trumps structure, and she’s so relentlessly perfect that she’s able to appear to adapt to any sound or scene when she’s really just applying her signature gloss atop it. She’s tough enough for 'Run the World (Girls),'...and also coy enough for 'Party'.

*the Pitchfork review of 4

"'4,' which largely deals with monogamy and all that comes with committing to one person for a potential lifetime. Which, like a bad marriage, might sound boring, repetitive, staid. But, in Beyoncé's more-than-capable and still-in-love hands, a relationship that lasts can seem as complicated and rewarding as anyone would hope." Pitchfork's Ryan Dombal continues, "The album — along with its excellent deluxe tracks — has one of the world's biggest stars exploring her talent in ways few could've predicted, which is always exciting."

*the Associated Press review of 4

"Beyoncé — just a few months shy of 30 — offers a bewitching blend of ballads and midtempo grooves that show a maturation in the singer's sound. She strips away the much of the musical pyrotechnics that have anchored some of her biggest solo jams for an album more heavy on ballads, and danceable hits that charm, instead of strong-arm, their way into your psyche."

*the Rolling Stone review of 4

"While her first three solo albums were full of blockbuster jams, 4 is a more relaxed, personal set that emphasizes ballads over bangers and showcases the singer’s nuances; it’s very much the sort of album a pop star makes when she doesn’t feel like she has anything to prove."
